The 26-year-old 'keeper started his career at Rochdale but was snapped up by West Ham in a £300,000 deal before he had made a League appearance at Spotland. He went on to make 59 League appearances for the Hammers and was in their side that beat Preston in the Play-Off Final to clinch a place in the Premier League in 2005. He also had loan spells at Wycombe, Hull, Wolves, Cardiff and Coventry in his time at Upton Park.
Bywater then moved on to Derby at the start of last season and was a regular in the Rams' line-up, helping them to promotion via a Play-Off Final win over West Brom. He joined Town on loan until the end of the season in the January transfer window.
