A freak Andy Gray goal denied Town three points after Sylvain Legwinski and Alan Lee gave Blues a dream start.

Legwinski's flashing header gave Blues the lead on seven minutes and Lee doubled the advantage two minutes later with another header.

Kyle Lafferty pulled the home side back into the game within 60 seconds when he rose above David Wright to head past Neil Alexander.

The Clarets' equaliser was hardly vintage though, Andy Gray raced on to an Alan Mahon pass and watched in glee as Alexander's clearance cannoned back off him and spun into the net.

Pablo Counago thought he had won the game for Blues five minutes from time but his close range finish was controversially ruled out for offside.

Jim Magilton made two changes to the side beaten at Hull, Legwinski and Billy Clarke coming in for Counago and Gary Roberts.

Legwinski linked up with Owen Garvan in the middle of the park, with Lee playing as a lone striker, Clarke and Jon Walters supporting from the flanks.

Burnley included former Town loanee Mahon in their line-up, while David Unsworth was on the bench for the Clarets.

Town got off to the best possible start through Legwinski's trademark near post header from Garvan's corner and Lee made it two with a looping header after good work by Clarke.

Burnley reduced the arrears almost immediately, Lafferty latching on to Wade Elliott's cross to head low past Alexander.

Lafferty fired over the bar while at the other end, Lee under hit his pass when  Walters was in a great position to test Gabor Kiraly in the Burnley goal.

The Hungarian international was tested just past the half hour mark when Walters' header had to be pushed over the bar, then Tommy Miller was denied by the 'keeper, Kiraly making the save with his feet.

Legwinski fired over the bar from distance as the half finished with Town continuing to create openings.

Miller had the first effort of the second-half, shooting straight at Kiraly, Jason De Vos then making a well timed challenge to deny Robbie Blake.

Stephen Jordan picked up the first yellow card of the game for a late challenge on Walters before Burnley levelled the scores on the hour, Clarke losing possession, Mahon's pass cleared against Gray by Alexander before looping into the unguarded net.

Alex Bruce made a terrific challenge to block Blake's strike at goal, Walters then going down in the Burnley box but no penalty appeals followed.

The game continued to flow from end to end, Lafferty firing wide from a good position, Alexander then saving well from the Northern Ireland international.

Counago replaced Clarke with 20 minutes left on the clock and the Spaniard was instantly involved, linking up with Garvan who rounded the stranded Kiraly but his cross was hacked clear by the retreating Clarets' defence.

Alexander held firm to palm away Lafferty's fierce drive before Burnley boss Steve Cotterill made his first change with 11 minutes left, Steve Jones replacing Elliott.

Town had the ball in the net with six minutes left, Walters setting up Counago but his celebrations were cut short by the linesman's late flag for offside. Garvan booked for dissent.

Mahon followed into referee Clive Webster's book for a foul on Counago with Ade Akinbiyi thrown into the action for the last exchanges. Mahon making way for James O'Connor.

De Vos and Bruce both bravely cleared with diving headers as Town held on to end a run of three away defeats and leave Lancashire with a deserved point.
