Two goals inside the opening quarter hour from Owen Garvan and Alan Lee and then a late strike from Danny Haynes gave Town the points at Portman Road.

Plymouth played all but one minute of the game with 10 men after Mathias Doumbe was sent-off for a professional foul after a challenge on Jon Walters.

Garvan's first goal of the season gave Blues the lead on seven minutes and then Lee rounded off a terrific move involving four Town players with a close range finish soon after.

Haynes' cameo role as a second-half substitute had Blues' fans on their feet, the teenager's pace causing Plymouth plenty of problems and he deserved his goal as the game went into added on time.

Doumbe saw red after his tussle on the edge of the box as they chased a long ball in the first minute of the game. Referee Jon Moss initially ruled against a foul but after consulting with his assistant, awarded Town a free-kick and sent-off the Pilgrims' defender.

Garvan sent the free-kick into the wall but the Irishman wasn't to be denied on seven minutes, curling a shot past Luke McCormick after Gary Roberts had set him up.

Scott Sinclair demonstrated the ability that has marked him out as a dangerman in the Championship this season on 10 minutes, weaving past three Town players before setting up Barry Hayles on the right, the cross came in but escaped Sylvan Ebanks-Blake at the far post.

Town extended the lead on 14 minutes in sublime fashion. Gavin Williams found Walters with a clever pass, who fed Garvan and his shot cross was converted by Lee from close range.

Lewis Price held firm at the near post after Sinclair crossed from the left, while at the other end Walters went close with a lob over McCormick that was cleared by Marcel Seip.

Town's front two carried too much physically for Plymouth's makeshift backline and Walters set up Lee who fired narrowly wide.

Sinclair continued to carry the main threat for the visitors, the Chelsea loanee hooking the ball over the bar after Price had punched out under pressure.

Great work by Lee down the left, the Republic of Ireland international spinning away from his marker, then crossing from the left almost put in Walters, then the two linked up again with Lee smashing the ball in the netbut from an offside position.

Garvan, growing in influence on the game by the minute, had a volley charged down by Gary Sawyer as Town threatened to tie up the game before half-time. The midfielder then released Walters who brought a save from McCormick.

Garvan then got on the end of a Matt Richards cross to head straight at the Plymouth 'keeper after creating the chance with a surge through midfield before finding the left midfielder on the flank.

Walters headed wide from De Vos' knock back across goal before the half finished with Roberts testing McCormick from the angle.

Plymouth thought they had pulled a goal back on 53 minutes when Ebanks-Blake bustled his way past De Vos and arrowed his shot past Price but referee Moss gave handball against the striker much to Pilgrims' boss Ian Holloway's disgust.

Price held comfortably from Seip's header as Plymouth carried the game to Town, Sinclair then having a free-kick blocked on the edge of the box.

Price then saved well at his near post from Ebanks-Blake before Town made the first change of the game,  Haynes replacing Richards just past the hour.

Williams danced around Lilian Nalis' challenge in midfield before seeing his shot from 25 yards flash just past the right hand post.

Plymouth made a double change midway though the half, Sinclair and Akos Buzsaky replaced by Kevin Gallen and Bojan Djordjic. Gallen immediately clipping the ball past the post from the edge of the box.

Lee shot straight at McCormick, the 'keeper then blasting the ball away from Garvan as the midfielder challenged.

Town made a double change with 15 minutes left on the clock, Fabian Wilnis and Walters making way for Billy Clarke and Ian Miller, the defenfer making his debut.

Hayles had a great chance to reduce the arrears on 78 minutes, chesting down inside the box but Price was quick off his line to make the save.

Miller was booked after a challenge on Hayles as the Pilgrims threatened to get back in the game and it took a great block from Alex Bruce to stop Gallen striking from inside the box.

Haynes showed a great turn of pace to beat Halmosi on the flank but his cross was cleared by Sawyer as Clarke looked to pounce.

Miller did superbly to rob Hayles when the striker looked destined to score before Blues wrapped the points with Haynes' pace again taking him clear of his marker, the England U19 international firing across the 'keeper and into the corner of the net.

Another Haynes burst set up Clarke for a great chance but the striker fired over with the last kick of the game as Town made it two wins on the trot.

Town: Price, Wilnis (Miller 74), De Vos, Bruce, Wright, Roberts, Garvan, Williams, Richards (Haynes 62), Lee, Walters (Clarke 74). Subs not used: Supple, Peters. Booked: Miller.
