Nicky Forster scored for the fourth game in succession but goals from Tony Capaldi and Micky Evans made it a disappointing finish to a disappointing season for Blues.

Forster, one of the many Town strikers who has spent a lengthy period on the sidelines this term, took his goal tally to seven for the campaign with a header from six yards out early in the game before Capaldi made it all square on the half hour mark.

Evans won the game in the second-half, giving the home fans the perfect send-off with a diving header from four yards out, the striker making his farewell for the Pilgrims after over 400 games for the club.

Jim Magilton also said his own goodbyes to Town, coming on as a second-half substitute for his 315th appearance for the Club after seven magnificent years.

The Town skipper threw his shirt to the travelling Blue Army with one lucky Town fan leaving Home Park with a reason to have a smile on their face.

Jaime Peters was handed his first start since September, with Ian Westlake returning to the side following ankle injury. Sam Parkin was on the bench after recovering from a broken ankle.

Akos Buzsaky fired wide with the first shot of the game, with the impressive David Norris going a little closer with another effort from distance that didn't test Shane Supple.

Forster then gave Town the lead on 12 minutes with a terrific header that went in off the underside of the bar after Chris Casement had made a superb run and then cross from the right flank.

The goal lifted Blues and Joe Royle's side enjoyed plenty of possession, Darren Currie whipping in a corner that was cleared as Jason De Vos challenged and Casement eager to join in the attack at every opportunity.

Vincent Pericard responded for Plymouth with a shot over the bar, Norris doing the same soon after with a right foot effort before the Pilgrims equalised on 28 minutes. Blues failed to clear the ball from Evans' header and Capaldi found the net from close range.

Plymouth finished the half on top, Evans testing Supple with a left foot strike that the 'keeper held at the second attempt. Supple dealt well with a couple of searching crosses from Buzsaky while Lilian Nalis picked up the only yellow card of the first-half after a late challenge on Westlake.

Richard Naylor soon followed him after the break, with Jason De Vos also cautioned for a foul on Norris.

Parkin replaced Vemund Brekke Skard on 54 minutes, his first appearance since that ankle break against Reading in November, the summer signing from Swindon linking up with Forster in attack for only the seventh time this season.

Evans brought the home fans to their feet with the second goal on his final appearance for the Pilgrims, heading in from four yards after Pericard had flicked on a Capaldi free-kick.

Supple then saved from Nalis before Magilton came on for his farewell appearance, replacing Owen Garvan with 30 minutes left.

Plymouth should have made it three seconds later though, Evans bursting clear of the Town defence but Supple timing his challenge superbly to make the save.

Pericard then had a chance to extend the home side's lead, his shot going inches wide while at the other end Magilton's pass fed Forster inside the box but the frontman couldn't test Romain Larrieu in the Pilgrims' goal.

At the other end a Currie free-kick wasn't held by Larrieu and Parkin snatched at his shot but couldn't keep his effort under the bar.

Plymouth made a triple substitution with 10 minutes left, Reuben Reid, Nick Chadwick and Anthony Pulis, son of manager Tony Pulis, coming on with Evans one of the players making way, receiving a standing ovation from the home fans as he made his way to the bench.

Liam Trotter became the 20th player to make his League debut for Town this season when he came on for Westlake nine minutes from time, the midfielder the sixth player from the FA Youth Cup winning side from 2005 to step up to first-team duty this season.

Town failed to trouble Larrieu over the closing stages though - and for much of the game really - and finish the season in 15th in the Championship.

Town: Supple, Casement, Naylor, De Vos, McEveley, Peters, Westlake (Trotter 81), Skard (Parkin 54), Garvan (Magilton 61), Currie, Forster. Subs not used: Price, Krause.
