Ipswich Town Chairman David Sheepshanks, and Chief Executive Derek Bowden, have gone back to their schooldays for an afternoon when they completed the IT Community Trust Sport 4 Choice introductory quiz, under the watchful eye of Sports 4 Choice Co-ordinator Kerry Hawes. This is designed to give Trust staff an indication of learners' current literacy and numeracy levels.

David Sheepshanks said. "Sport 4 Choice is a simple yet fun Adult Learning programme. It is designed for sports fans, or indeed anyone, to brush up on their maths and English skills. The introductory quiz is the first step that participants take on the road to NVQ qualifications. As Trustees, Derek and I wanted to assess the quality of the course we are offering.

"It provides a first class opportunity for those who perhaps missed out on gaining formal qualifications. Sport 4 Choice courses help adults get back on track with their literacy and numeracy in a sport-orientated and fun environment.

"I am pleased that this is another example of Ipswich Town Community Trust using the power and appeal of football and our brand; this time to stimulate Adult Education that can mean so much in self esteem and enhanced job prospects"

Sport 4 Choice, funded through the Learning Skills Council and European Social Fund, has been developed specifically to appeal to sports fans and, for those studying at Portman Road, sessions are delivered around a football theme. The course gives learners the chance to get out of the classroom and practice their interviewing techniques in the media suite, write match reports in the press box, study the angles of the pitch and much, much more.

Sport 4 Choice courses are free and give learners the chance to gain an NVQ level 1 in either maths or English. To qualify for a Sport 4 Choice course you must be over 16 years old, not currently in full time education and hold no recognised qualification in either maths or English. Learners who sit the introductory quiz (45 minutes) receive a £10 cash payment with further incentives offered throughout the programme.

To brush up on their skills, adults can join specific courses run at the Portman Road ground, or take part in quizzes and fun sessions at various centres across the county.
